What is SafeHomes?

SafeHomes is a program, sponsored by Tewksbury CARES, that helps parents create a home and community atmosphere that makes alcohol and drug use by minors unacceptable.  By signing the attached pledge you will become a SafeHomes participant. This will allow you access to a list of parents who have signed the pledge to help you feel comfortable having your child or children attend gatherings at a Safe Home – safe from alcohol and safe from drugs. This program will also help Tewksbury’s young people understand that alcohol and drugs are not acceptable.

Did you know?

By age 9, children are deciding whether or not they will use alcohol. Decisions to use alcohol are influenced by the home and community environments and whether or not alcohol use by those underage is considered acceptable by adults in the community.  Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance by young people. In Tewksbury, 52% of teens in grades 7 through 12 used alcohol in their lifetime; 28% used alcohol in the past 30 days.

Two out of three teens say it’s easy to get alcohol from their homes without their parents knowing it.

You can help protect your children
and the  children in Tewksbury by:

*Keeping all alcohol in a secure place

*If you drink, modeling healthy alcohol use

*Not supporting teen drinking. Don’t host parties or allow your children to go to parties where alcohol is  served. Make your expectations clear to your children.

*Signing the SafeHomes Pledge.

Family Guidelines

*Inform your children that you have joined

*Know where your children are and let them know where you are.

*Be awake when young people come home at night.

*Assure your children that they can call you to be picked up whenever needed.

*Get to know your children’s friends and their parents.

Social Activities

*Be aware that many parties, sleepovers and other activities in the community are being held without supervision; alcohol and drugs may be present.

*Be aware of impromptu get-togethers and parties.

*Both adults and young people need to know that fun does not have to be equated with the use of alcohol and other drugs.

*Call the person in charge of the social engagement to verify occasion and location, check on adult supervision, and that there will be no alcohol or drugs.

*If the activity seems inappropriate, express your concern and keep your child home.
